„WALDBAD – AIR IS FOOD“

The refreshing Waldbad installation discusses air as the most essential food and provides in Alpbach a reference to the current Austrian Pavilion at the World Exhibition Expo 2015, which is currently in Milan under
the theme „Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life“. At the same time the transformation of the swimming pool provides a stage for events around the topics of food waste and food as a resource. In the context of the theme of the Forum Alpbach 2015 „InEquality“ air, climate and atmosphere as a connecting medium between all living beings on the planet Earth shows a sensual experience in an artistic way. The forest as a resource for fresh air, climate and oxygen producer creates a place of recreation and discourse.

Air is a „food“ – information carriers, energy producer and resource at the same time. Food is directly linked with climatic conditions. Through its local climatic condition in the form of climate and weather air is one of the most important foundations for global food production. We all need clean air to breathe, without we can‘t survive no longer than a few minutes. The technological progress of recent decades has brought with it drastic environmental problems.  In the age of Anthropocene – the era in which men has become one of the most important factors influencing the biological, geological and atmospheric processes on Earth,  air is an essential good to protect and promote the development of green technologies.

The installation invites visitors  to descend into the pool and have a swim in the forest pool. Literally to take an air-bath. Already with the first breath, the visitors become an active part of the installation. The young forest is assembled from three representative Austrian Forest ecotypes together spruce fir forest, pine-larch forest and a forest edge zone and generates with technical assistance from high-pressure fog nozzles a unique immersion in a hybrid Atembad. By the technology of high pressure fog nozzles the natural power of evapotranspiration (evaporation cooling) is supported and provides refreshing effects of the forest area in the smallest space. Here technology and nature merges into an active performative dialogue.
The installation in the vacant indoor swimming pool of Alpbach becomes a showcase for climate-positive typologies in architecture.
